What Are “Tokens”?
(And Why Does AI Cost Money?)

Ever notice that ChatGPT and Claude are free to try, but sooner or later they nudge you toward a paid plan? Or that some months your free plan feels generous, and other times it cuts you off mid-conversation? There's a simple reason behind all of it, and once you understand it, you can get a lot more out of either tool without spending a dime more than you need to.

⚡ Here's the secret: “tokens.”

Every time you type a message to Claude or ChatGPT, it gets broken down into small chunks called tokens — roughly three-quarters of a word each. When the AI writes back to you, that answer is built out of tokens too. Reading your question, “thinking,” and writing the reply all take computing power — real electricity, real machines, real cost to the company running it.
Think of it like your electric bill. A quick question is like microwaving a cup of coffee — barely a blip. A long back-and-forth conversation, or asking AI to read and summarize a ten-page document, is like leaving the oven on all afternoon. Someone pays for that power. On the free plans, the company eats a limited amount of it. Past a certain point, they ask you to help cover it.
That's the whole story behind usage limits and subscription prices. More tokens in, more tokens out, more it costs — for you or for them.

💬 “But I pay $20/month and use AI constantly — why have I never seen a token or hit a limit?”
Fair question. Here's the honest answer: your $20 doesn't buy you tokens one at a time — it buys you a large, generous bucket of messages that refreshes every few hours, all day, every day. For the vast majority of people, even people who chat with AI a lot, that bucket is big enough that you'll never bump into the bottom of it. Tokens are just the company's internal math for what that bucket costs them to fill. You'd only see actual token counts and per-token charges if you left the consumer app and used the “developer” side of these tools (the API) — that's metered by the token, in real dollars. The $20 apps most of us use were built specifically to hide all of that.
