Free vs. Plus: What Are You Actually Paying For?
I’m teaching a ChatGPT class in Fountain Valley this week, and there’s one question that comes up in almost every class: “Do I really need to pay for this thing?”
Short answer: maybe not. Long answer: it depends entirely on what you’re asking it to do. Here’s the plain-English version, so you can decide for yourself instead of taking my word — or anyone else’s — for it.
How complex a question it can handle
Free is genuinely good at quick, simple asks — “explain this,” “help me write a note.” Paid plans can hold a real back-and-forth on something more involved: comparing options, working through a decision, a question with several moving parts.
How much it can work with at once
Free tops out around 12 pages of text in one conversation before it starts losing track. The paid Plus plan can hold roughly 40 pages. If you’re the type who pastes in a long document and asks questions about it, this is the limit that will actually bite you.
What else it can do
Beyond chatting, the paid plans add real file and image analysis, more storage for saved files, and — on Plus — a few advanced tools Free doesn’t get access to at all.
Quick gut check: Use ChatGPT once in a while for simple stuff? Free is genuinely fine — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Lean on it daily but keep things straightforward? The $8/month Go plan splits the difference. Working with long documents or multi-step questions? That’s where the $20/month Plus plan starts to feel like a different tool.
