Four Ways to Use ChatGPT (You're Probably Using One)

Here's something I've noticed in class. Almost everyone uses ChatGPT one way, which is whichever way they first tried it. Some of you only use the website. Many of you tell me you only use it on your phone.

Both are fine. But there are four ways to use ChatGPT, and each one is better at something.

This Week's Russell Rundown

Four Ways to Use ChatGPT

A quick tour of all four, in about a minute and a half.

1. The website. Go to chatgpt.com in any browser and start typing. There's nothing to install, and new features show up here first. Best for longer work at a desk, like writing a letter or researching a trip.

2. The computer app. A free download for Windows or Mac. It's the same ChatGPT, sitting on your computer so you don't have to open a browser. Handy for a quick question while you're working on something else. Get it from OpenAI's download page.

3. The phone app. A free download for iPhone or Android. This is the one that goes where you go, and it can use your camera. Take a picture of a plant, a label, or a confusing letter, and ask a question about it. Get it from the Apple App Store (iPhone) or the Google Play Store (Android).

4. Voice. This one isn't a separate place. It works inside the other three. You talk, and ChatGPT talks back, like a conversation. Good when your hands are busy or typing is a chore.

How They Differ

  Website Computer app Phone app
Setup Nothing to install Install once Install once
Speak instead of typing Click the microphone Click the microphone Tap the microphone
Add a picture you have Drag and drop it in Drag and drop it in Tap the plus (+), then Photos
Take a new picture No No Tap the plus (+), then Camera
Best for Longer work at a desk Quick questions while you work Out and about, and anything with a photo

One thing that surprises people: sign in with the same account everywhere, and your conversations follow you. Start a question on your phone on a walk and finish it on your computer at home.

So there's no best way. Pick the one that fits what you're doing.

New: Live Sessions on Zoom

Several of you have asked for more hands-on demos, so I'm starting something new: free live sessions on Zoom. Since so many of you use ChatGPT on your phone, that's where the first one starts. I'll do it live on a phone, on screen, and address your questions.
