A more natural way to interact with artificial intelligence

Most of us have learned to use ChatGPT by typing a question, reading the answer, and typing another question. But what if you could simply have a conversation with it?

You can! And for many people, this may be one of the most useful features of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Voice lets you speak naturally, hear answers, ask follow-up questions, and even interrupt when you want clarification. It feels less like operating a computer and more like having a conversation.

And here's the good news: you don't need an expensive subscription to try it.

Four Ways to Communicate with ChatGPT

One of the things I find particularly interesting is that you don't always have to communicate the same way.

Your questionChatGPT's answerHow it works
SpeakSpokenHave a live voice conversation
SpeakWrittenUse microphone dictation to enter your question
TypeSpokenUse the Read Aloud feature on a written answer
TypeWrittenTraditional ChatGPT interaction

What's the difference?

The microphone used for dictation converts your speech into written text. You can review and edit it before sending.

The Voice feature, on the other hand, starts an interactive spoken conversation. ChatGPT listens and responds aloud. And if you want to see the words too, just scroll down during the conversation and the written transcript is there.

Why I Think This Matters

I've been using Wispr Flow to dictate many of my ChatGPT prompts. It's an excellent way to get my thoughts into writing without typing.

But ChatGPT Voice offers something different. Instead of dictating a prompt, submitting it, and reading the result, I can carry on a conversation. I can interrupt, ask for a simpler explanation, or change the direction of the discussion.

Consider a few situations:

  • While cooking or working on a project: ask a question without stopping to type.
  • While driving: ChatGPT now has an app for Apple CarPlay that works by voice alone, with no text on the car's screen. It needs an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later.
  • For people with limited vision: hear information instead of relying on small text.
  • For anyone uncomfortable with keyboards: ask questions naturally, without worrying about typing or spelling.

I believe the accessibility benefits are particularly important. Someone who struggles with reading a screen may discover that conversational AI opens up an entirely new way to access information.

What Does It Cost?

ChatGPT Voice works on all three personal plans: Free, Go and Plus. The two cheaper plans run a lighter voice model, and paying mostly buys you more talking time.

My suggestion

Start with the Free plan. Learn how to use Voice before deciding whether a paid subscription is worthwhile.

Getting Started

On your smartphone

  1. Open the ChatGPT app.
  2. Look for the waveform icon (a few vertical lines) at the far right of the message box.
  3. Tap it to start a voice conversation. The first time, your phone will ask permission to use the microphone.
  4. Begin speaking naturally.
  5. Listen to ChatGPT's response and ask another question whenever you like.

The conversation keeps going even if you switch to another app or lock your phone.

On your computer

Go to chatgpt.com in your web browser and click the same waveform icon at the right of the message box.

Choosing a voice

You can choose from several different voices. Open Settings, select Voice, and preview the choices. Pick the one you find most pleasant and easiest to understand.

Try This Simple Experiment

Start a Voice conversation and say:

"I'm learning how to use ChatGPT. Tell me three interesting ways you could help me in everyday life. Please explain them one at a time."

After ChatGPT begins answering, try interrupting:

"Wait a minute. Can you give me an example of that?"

Or:

"That's interesting, but can you explain it more simply?"

Notice that you don't need to construct a perfect prompt. You can develop your question through conversation. And you don't have to wait for it to finish talking. Just jump in.

What About Reading Answers Aloud?

You don't need a voice conversation to hear ChatGPT speak. If you've typed a question and gotten a written answer, look for Read Aloud in the menu below the answer (on a phone, press and hold the answer to find it).

One important distinction: simply adding "read aloud" to the end of a typed prompt generally doesn't play any audio. You need to use the Read Aloud button or start a Voice conversation.

A Few Things to Remember

ChatGPT Voice is powerful, but it isn't perfect. It can misunderstand what you say. It can also give incorrect information, just as written ChatGPT answers sometimes do. And while Voice can be used hands-free, not every ChatGPT feature works entirely through spoken commands.

For important information, particularly medical, financial or legal matters, verify the answers independently. The higher the stakes, the more you verify.

My Closing Thought

We spend a great deal of time teaching people how to write better prompts for artificial intelligence. But perhaps we're overlooking something simpler.

You don't have to become an expert at writing prompts to benefit from AI. Sometimes, you can just start talking.

For many people, particularly older adults and those with accessibility challenges, that may be the most welcoming introduction to artificial intelligence yet.

Give it a try. You may be surprised by how natural the conversation feels.
