Which AI Should You Use?

Sign Up, Install, and Know Which One to Reach For

Why This Guide Exists

In this week's newsletter, you saw the short version: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all excellent, general-purpose AI assistants, and the differences come down to fit, not “best.”

This guide goes one step further. It walks you through creating a free account and installing the desktop app for each of the three — five minutes apiece — and gives you a simple cheat sheet for which tool to reach for depending on what you're doing.

The One Sentence to Remember
The right AI tool is the one you actually use. Pick one, get comfortable with it, and add the others later if you want them.

Part 1: Getting Each Tool Set Up

Each of these takes about five minutes, needs no credit card for the free version, and only asks for an email address (or an existing Google account) and, in some cases, a phone number to confirm you're a real person.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Sign up on the web

1
Go to chatgpt.com
2
Click Sign up, then choose Google, Microsoft, Apple, or a plain email address
3
If asked, verify with a code texted to your phone — this is just spam prevention
4
If you see a screen encouraging you to “Try Plus,” choose the free option to continue — your account works either way

Install the desktop app (Mac and Windows)

1
Go to chatgpt.com and look for the download link for your computer
2
Run the installer and sign in with the same account you just created
3
Once installed, a keyboard shortcut (Option+Space on Mac, Alt+Space on Windows) opens ChatGPT instantly from anywhere on your computer

Claude (Anthropic)

Sign up on the web

1
Go to claude.ai
2
Sign up with your Google account, or enter your email and verify it with the code sent to your inbox
3
Verify your phone number if prompted, and accept the terms

Install the desktop app (Mac and Windows)

1
Go to claude.ai/download
2
On a Mac, open the downloaded file and drag Claude into your Applications folder
3
On Windows, run the downloaded installer
4
Open the app and sign in with the account you created above

Gemini (Google)

Sign up on the web

1
Go to gemini.google.com
2
If you already use Gmail, you're already signed in — there's nothing else to create
3
If not, sign in with any Google account, or create a free one at accounts.google.com first

Install the desktop app (Mac and Windows)

1
On a Mac, go to gemini.google/mac, download the installer, and open it
2
On Windows, look for the Gemini app — it rolled out to Windows in spring 2026 and puts a quick-search bar on your desktop
3
A keyboard shortcut (Option+Space on Mac, Alt+Space on Windows) brings it up instantly, just like the other two

Part 2: Which Tool for Which Task

A simple cheat sheet. None of this is a strict rule — all three tools can do most of these things reasonably well. This is just where each one tends to shine.

If you're doing this…Reach for…Why
A quick everyday questionAny of the threeAll three handle simple questions well — use whichever you already have open.
Writing or editing something long (a letter, a report, a speech)ClaudeCareful with longer text and tends to keep a clear, natural tone.
Working inside Gmail, Google Docs, or Google PhotosGeminiIt's built directly into those tools, so it can see what you're working on.
Making a picture or imageChatGPTBest track record for image generation, with the most tutorials online.
A hands-free, spoken conversationChatGPTIts voice mode listens and speaks in real time, like an actual phone call.
Something tied to current events or a recent dateGeminiIt's connected to Google Search, so it's more likely to have the latest information.

Part 3: If You Just Want One

1
If your life already runs through Gmail, Google Docs, or an Android phone — start with Gemini.
2
If you do a lot of writing — letters, reports, planning — and want a careful, clear partner — start with Claude.
3
If you want the most widely used option, with the most guides and tutorials available online — start with ChatGPT.
Remember
You can always add the other two later. Starting with one — any one — beats waiting until you've found the “perfect” choice.
